Shake what I gave ya

I got to thinking today about stuff.  Nothing of great importance, I suppose, but seeing as how my mind is often like a train to nowhere derailing in poppy fields and taking the long route instead of direct tunnels, perhaps the important thing is that I sometimes actually remember what I was originally trying to think...  Anyway.

Today's thoughts revolved a lot around my daughters and the great fun I am having in embarrassing them.  Okay, so, I'm, like, the cool mom.  Well, to everyone but my kids.  Maybe not everyone, but I AM pretty cool.  Right?  For example.  Some conversation was made about how I'm embarrassing when I dance (ahem...  Yes, child, that's the point...  I don't break out the moves I don't want YOU mimicking...). I assured Katy I would dance all the way to our destination.  Then I proceeded to embarrass her all the way to soccer practice.

There IS a point to this, kinda...  Maybe...

See, while I am the mom who will goof off and joke with my kids (and yours), I am also the mom who will sit down and have those heart to heart talks and the *ahem* hard talks with my kids.  my kids know that they can be as odd as they see fit, but that it all has to fit within acceptable parameters of modesty and expectation.  Unless, of course, we're in the kitchen over exaggerating made up dance moves to sappy 80s power ballads.  Even then, it's preferable to not be in your underwear...  if there's company...

Maybe there's not a point.  Or maybe the point is that because I'm the mom who will act stupid in front of my kids (and their friends) I'm also the mom kids trust with their secrets and concerns, crushes and accomplishments.  Sometimes you have to let your guard down to help your kids let theirs down.  You never know when putting the iPod on shuffle and acting like a total goob will have a positive impact on your relationship with your kids.

So I suppose my thought for today is this:  having trouble connecting?  Dance like a goob.  Works every time.  Try it.  If nothing else the hilarity of seeing the priceless expression on your kid's face when you break out the cabbage patch in front of their crush and declare "I got the moves like Jaggar" is worth it.  Oh, the fun I've had this week.
